Thanks for the nice application! One thing that might help is a way to link to a web-based library or wiki that would list process names to a description about them.

Processlibrary.com is an example. By using ProcessQuicklink you can simply click beside the process name to link to the web library. Of course this applies to Windows machines, but I bet it would work for Apple devices too. Maybe it would lead to a list of bad apps which cause problems in the iPad….

    Best wishes

      Hi smile4y,

thanks for the kind words. Sorry for the late reply, your post was filtered out by our spam filter.
I am going to check out the service you recommended. However, it is almost impossible to maintain a list of all the 800.000+ iOS apps (and the list keeps growing).

      Regards,
      Károly

I tried to write a review in the app store. It said I could not as I hadn’t downloaded the app. Which is rubbish as I have. However, this is what I would have said

Does exactly what it  says it will.
Very handy too see what’s going on under the hood.
Had a couple of other app crashes and it’s reassuring to know I didn’t imagine them!

      Hi Vic,

I really appreciate your intention to write a review, and I’m pleased to hear you’ve found iSyslog useful.
It would be great to see this review also in iTunes, though – maybe next time you succeed. :)

      Best regards,
      Károly

    Hi,
    I am getting mDNSResponder – PlatformSentUDP;invalad interface index 0000
    CLTM
    WIFId
    CommCenter
    UserEventAgent
Where do I sent these, they all get blank’s for the email addresses.
    Thank you

      Hi,

this seems to be a system log entry, not one produced by a given application. Even if marked as errors, these messages usually indicate temporary issues (network or wifi related), which disappear after a while.

Where do I sent these, they all get blank’s for the email addresses.

iSyslog cannot fill the address field automatically (there is no way to fetch the support eMail addresses for all iOS apps).
After identifying the faulty app, you can lookup the support address from the app’s iTunes page and fill it manually.

      Best regards,
      Károly

      Hi Ron,

iSyslog retrieves and presents the contents of the current iOS log stack. For performance and storage considerations, the operating system limits the stack size to 256 entries, and newly generated logs push out older entries.
This means that you can see the most recent 256 entries.
As a hint: if you are interested in a specific app’s logs, start it, use it for a given amount of time (or until the crash happens), and right afterwards start / refresh iSyslog.
Besides you can always take a snapshot of the logs by exporting them via eMail.

Hey. I specifically purchased this app to inspect crash reports, but this app doesnt provide this as mentioned in the description. No diagnostics can be made if This app only tells me where the crash report is – which I knew already! Total ripoff and not optimizes to iphone4 neither iPad!

      Hi Jeremy,

iSyslog retrieves all its information from the iOS internal log system. If something is there, you’ll get it displayed in iSyslog. Sometimes apps crash without providing extra logs (sudden death).
In such cases it may help if you try to reproduce the crash – chances are that the app will produce logs.

With regards to your second issue:
The app is fully optimized for the retina display / iPhone4 and older devices as well.
Indeed, it is not a universal app, meaning it will run as an iPhone app on the iPad. Actually the latter should be quite obvious based upon the app’s description.
I’m sorry if you are disappointed – as always, you can ask for a refund at Apple.

I googled a bit, and it turns out that the syslog service is indeed disabled on JB’s – as I originally assumed.
It seems that installing the syslogd enabler from Cydia will start the required service, and iSyslog will work also on your jailbroken device.
You can also install the syslogd toggle for SBSettings to easily enable and disable syslogd.

More details on enabling syslogd on jb’s here.

Note, that I haven’t tried this personally, but the source seems to be reliable.

Hope this helps. I think you understand I cannot put this in the official app’s description, though. ;)

I have no idea how to start the service.
Especially since you haven’t mentioned any details.
Everything else is functional on my iphone.
I even checked the mobile substrate/sbsettings, which has the switches
    for apps that are running.

It looks like the syslog(d) service is not running / disabled. (This would never happen on a non-jailbroken device.) Can you start the mentioned service somehow?

The app relies on reliable iOS services. A blank screen means that these low level services are somehow disabled, which is normally not possible.

Would you please try to send the logs from the device? If the attachment is not empty, it means that we are facing a UI artifact. However, if the attachment does not contain anything, the issue is that the required services have been disabled on your device.

Do you have a jailbroken device? Could you send me a screenshot (support address provided on the app’s iTunes page)?
    Thanks!

No, I didn’t accidentally drag down the view.
And Yes, I have tried refreshing several times.

Additionally, I thought that I might have had a corrupted program.
So I deleted it and re-downloaded it from Apple numerous times…same results.

Yesterday, I purchased and downloaded Isyslog. The only screen that comes up on my IPhone 4 running IOS 5.0.1 is the initial information screen, with the ? on left and arrow on right. If I push the ? I get the About screen. That’s all I get, even after a crashed app.

      Hi Chris,

this is weird, usually you should see processes and logs, even if no app did crash. Maybe you dragged down the view accidentally, and you see the stats pie-chart?
Additionally, have you tried pressing the refresh button on the top-right corner?

Thanks for writing an awesome app that finally doesn’t require jb’ing our devices to diagnose them :)
It would be a great addition though if we could somehow filter the results. Or some kind of rules system, like “don’t display errors that start with X” or sth like that.
Being able to clear read logs would also be great.

Keep it up! You’re doing it right.

      Thanks for the feedback! :)
Filtering might be part of an upcoming update. The latest version of the iPhone version provides now a search field.
Clearing logs however is a different thing: iSyslog is internally relying on Apple’s system logger, which is managed by the operating system – meaning we cannot remove log entries.

    Hi Mario,

thank you for the testing and the hint!

Indeed, adding a filename inside the zip works.
The fix is going to be part of the next update (coming soon).

The issue has been fixed in version 1.2.

If there is also something else you’d like to see as a new feature or enhancement, please let us know.

    Regarding iSysLog for iPhone/iPad…
If you try to sent the diagnostic email using GMail the email is prevented from being sent because the zipped file contains a file without an extension. GMail assumes this file is an executable file of some sort and prevents it’s being sent. I did some testing and found if you add the extension “.txt” to the text file within the zip file GMail sends it without error.
    Thanks.
